Tom's Great Blue Heron
There’s nothing more exciting, and artistically satisfying as selling an original work. Also having original work accepted into galleries or shows. This Silver Sycamore Gallery in Ste. Genevieve, MO has hung a 3 part series (shown above) of large birds of prey recently. They didn’t sell (not yet anyway), but I have heard they generate conversation among visitors. As an artist that focuses on nature with conversation as a key topic involving wild species and their habitats, conversation and engaging the audience through art is my aim. Toward the end of 2024, I had someone new come into knowledge of my art. He saw this series and was very curious about them. At 9” x 12” these are on the smaller side given the scale I normally work on. Tom was interested in a larger size and asked me if I’d consider replicating one of these 3 at a different size. I enthusiastically said yes. That’s a dream commission and I was happy to start right away. Especially while I still had some hard to find Lamy mango ink in supply. After a few weeks into the project I was able to share progress with him. The behind the scene process is part of the commission. I try and make a connection to my approach with the owner. My drawings can take months and want to ensure the composition and size is truly going to work out before getting too deep into the details. After a few more months I was able to deliver the work. He was very excited and thankful for the piece. As was I. Even more so when he sent me photos of it framed in his home.
It’s created conversations for him in his life which makes it all worth it.
Here are the results:
The original 3 are available by gallery appointment only here in my hometown of Ste. Genevieve Missouri as of Jan 2025.
